Why Is My Candle Smoking or Flickering? Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even the highest quality candle requires a little bit of "candle care" to perform its best. If your candle is producing black smoke (soot) or the flame keeps dying out, don't worry - most of these issues are easy to fix.

1. The Wick is Too Long (The #1 Cause of Soot)

If you see a tall, dancing flame and black smoke staining the glass, your wick is likely too long. A long wick draws more wax than it can cleanly burn.

  • The Fix: Trim the wick to 1/4 inch (about 5mm) before every single burn.

  • Pro Tip: Use a dedicated wick trimmer or even nail clippers for a clean cut.

2. The "Memory" Effect (Tunneling)

Does your candle burn straight down the middle, leaving a ring of hard wax around the edges? This is called "tunneling" and it eventually causes the wick to "drown" and go out.

  • The Fix: Every time you light your candle, let it burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted to the edges of the jar. This usually takes 1–2 hours.

  • Why? Wax has a "memory." If you don't let it melt fully the first time, it will always follow that narrow path.

3. The Wick is Drowning

If the flame is tiny and struggling to stay lit, it might be submerged in too much liquid wax. This often happens after tunneling occurs.

  • The Fix: Carefully soak up a bit of the excess melted wax with a paper towel (while the candle is unlit or very carefully while lit) to expose more of the wick.

4. Drafts and Airflow

Candles hate wind! If your candle is near an open window, a fan or an AC vent, the airflow will disturb the flame, causing it to flicker and release soot.

  • The Fix: Move your candle to a draft-free area to ensure a steady, calm burn.

5. Debris in the Wax

Bits of burnt wick or matches left in the wax pool can act as secondary wicks. This creates extra smoke and can even be a fire hazard.

  • The Fix: Always keep the wax pool clean and free of any debris.
